Mahalaya Paksha, is believed to be a special time window for healing karmic afflictions related to your ancestors. It is a time to help them purify and free themselves. This powertime is called Mahalaya Paksham. It occurs during the Moon\u2019s waning period during the month of Bhadrapada (occur between Aug\/Sep\/Oct), which is known in Tamil Nadu as Purattasi.<\/p>\n

This 15-day window leads into the New Moon powertime, which is celebrated as the climax. It is the ideal New Moon to dissolve the thought cycles and karma that was passed on to you from your mother and father. Your ancestors are closest to you and ready to shower you with blessings on this day.<\/p>\n

  • Durga Saves Heaven & Earth from a Demon<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    According to scripture and tradition, a demon named Mahishasura was torturing everyone in Heaven and on Earth. He accumulated a lot of power during his reign of terror, making him increasingly destructive.<\/p>\n

    The divine archetypes asked for the help of Vishnu, Archetype of Wealth and Preservation. Vishnu, along with the other two members of the Trinity \u2013 Brahma (creation) and Shiva (karma removal and purification) \u2013 created Goddess Durga to kill the demon.<\/p>\n

    Goddess Durga descended to the Earth plane, during what would later become Mahalaya, to kill the demon. The other archetypes supplied her with an assortment of weapons and heavenly powers to get the job done.<\/p>\n

    These events make Mahalaya an excellent time to connect with Durga to destroy inner and outer demons that are troubling you or your ancestors.<\/p>\n

    • Karna Learns the Importance of Connecting with Ancestors<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      In another legend, Karna \u2013 the son of the Sun God, Surya \u2013 died and went to heaven. He was greeted with money and treasure instead of an offering of food.<\/p>\n

      Indra \u2013 the King of Heaven \u2013 explained to him that he received wealth instead of food because he was generous with wealth but did not connect with his ancestors through the practice of Tarpanam. Indra countered this by saying he did not know his ancestors and that it would be pointless to do Tarpanam.<\/p>\n

      Indra told Karna that it was not necessary to know who his ancestors were. Then he sent Karna back to the Earth plane so he could do Tarpanam for two weeks.<\/p>\n

      Now, people honor Karna every year by performing Tarpanam. The story reminds us of how important it is to honor those who came before us and built the foundation for our current lives. It also reminds us to practice Tarpanam for the purpose of evolution, freedom, and enlightenment for all.<\/p>\n

      How to Practice Tarpanam<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

      You will need non-instant white rice, black sesame seeds, at least one coin, and a container of water. These are all easy items to find. If you can also obtain dharba grass, you can add it to your Tarpanam practice.<\/p>\n
