What is Maha Shashti Vratham<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Muruga also known as Subramanya or Skanda<\/strong><\/a> is a popular Hindu deity. He is one of the sons of God Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Muruga worship is very popular in Tamil Nadu. Shashti Tithi is special to Lord Muruga, it is an ideal day to worship him. Devotees observe fast on the Shukla Paksha Shashti day.<\/p>\n

The Shashti thithi (6th day) of the Shukla paksha in the month of Kartika (October-November) is the most significant of them all. This day is hailed as \u2018Maha Skanda Shasti\u2019. During this day, Lord Murugan is specially worshipped in south Indian states and very grandly in Tamil Nadu.<\/p>\n

It is a long-standing belief that a person offering prayers and observes fasting on Skanda Shasti<\/strong><\/a> will receive the choicest blessings of Lord Muruga.<\/p>\n

Procedure to Observe Maha Shasti Vratham<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Shasti fasting begins with sunrise. The fast is broken on the next day morning after praying to Lord Surya (Sun God).<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. Devotees observe fast during the 6-day period.
\n2. Devotees observing fast will consume food once a day (either in the morning or evening or night).
\n3. Devotees can consume water, milk, butter milk, tender coconut or fruit juice.
\n4. During the 6-day period devotees recite slokas and stotras of Lord Skanda during Morning and Evening.
\n5. Devotees have to visit Lord Muruga temple<\/a> at least once in a day for these 6 days.
\n6. The Skanda Shasti fasting ends on the Sixth day and on the sixth day the devotees will visit Lord Muruga temple.<\/p>\n

Rules of Observing Skanda Shasti Vratham<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u2022 Observer of the fast has to completely avoid intake of non-vegetarian food during the six-days period.
\n\u2022 If able to the observers of fast can also avoid garlic and onions.
\n\u2022 Those observing have to read scriptures related to Lord Muruga like Skanda Puranam and recite the Muruga devotional songs and stortras like skandha Shasti Kavasam, Subramanya Bhujangam and Kumarasthvam.
\n\u2022 Majority of devotees daily visit Lord Muruga temples during the fasting period.
\n\u2022 Some devotees who cannot fast intake single meal a day and some take the meal at noon and others at night.
\n\u2022 Fasting is not compulsory, if your health does not permit you can skip fasting and adhere to the other vrata procedures.
\n\u2022 Some section of devotees consumes only fruits and liquid food during the 6-day period.<\/p>\n
