Significance of Light<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Light is accorded high importance in all faiths and particularly in Hinduism. Hindus follow the custom of lighting lamps during sacred and auspicious occasions. Hindu scriptures hail light as the sign of propitiousness, fortune, auspiciousness, holiness, and abundance.<\/p>\n

Light removes the darkness and signifies the victory of good over evil. It is because of light one can see things correctly.<\/p>\n

In most Hindu homes and establishments, a lamp is lit daily as a mark of inviting god. The ghee or oil lamps used for pooja purposes are known as Diyas or Dreams.<\/p>\n

Ghee and sesame oil is generally ideal for lighting lamps. The light of a ghee lamp is believed to attract positiveness and bring prosperity. Therefore, lighting Deepams is a perfect way to invite Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, to home. She is believed to be happy by seeing the lit deepams and showers her blessings upon the family, which regularly lights diyas.<\/p>\n

Karthikai Deepam falls on the full moon in the Tamil month of Karthigai (November-December of the Gregorian calendar). The festival is observed for three days; the first day is called Bharani deepam, the second day is Annamalai Deepam, and the third day is Pancharatra deepam.<\/p>\n
