Who are Rahu and Ketu?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Rahu and Ketu<\/a> are part of the Navagrahas (nine planets). Vedic astrology accords great significance to these two planets. They are known as \u2018Chaaya grahas\u2019 (shadow planets) as they owe only an astrological existence.<\/span><\/p>\n

As per Hindu Puranas, the origin of Rahu and Ketu<\/a> can be traced back to the popular legend \u2018Samudra Manthan.\u2019 Once Devas and Asuras churned the divine milky ocean to obtain \u2018Amrut,\u2019 the divine elixir. After much of the churning, Lord Dhanvantri emerged from the ocean with an \u2018Amrut\u2019 pot. The Asuras stole the Amrut pot and ran away. The Devas complained to Lord Maha Vishnu, who took the form of a beautiful damsel \u2018Mohini\u2019 and went to the Demons, distracted them using her beauty, and took back the Amrut pot to the Devas started distributing it to them.<\/span><\/p>\n

An Asura named \u2018Svarbhanu\u2019 saw this and changed his appearance as a deva to obtain some Amrut. Mohini gave him some Amrut, and he drank it. However, Surya Dev (Sun) and the Chandra Dev (Moon) realized that Svarbhanu was an Asura and alerted Lord Vishnu. In retribution, Lord Vishnu severed Svarbhanu\u2019s head with his discus, the Sudarshan Charka.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, even though Svarbhanu\u2019s head and body were severed, they remained immortal as a separate entity because before the head was severed, he managed to swallow a drop of the Amrut. Lord Brahma named the Head Rahu and the headless body Ketu. Later, Rahu and Ketu performed penance towards Lord Shiva and qualified to be part of the Navagrahas.<\/span><\/p>\n
