Every year, on the 9th<\/sup> day of the Chaitra month (March \u2013 April), festivals in India honor the birth of Lord Rama (RAH-mah). Rama took birth as an Avatar (Divine Incarnation) of Vishnu. He became a king. Celebrations usually run for nine days.<\/p>\n

The Meaning of Rama\u2019s Birthday (Rama Navami)<\/span><\/p>\n

Rama represents truth, righteousness, purity of purpose, and justice. He\u2019s known for giving tremendous powers to his devotees, like Hanuman, the Monkey God who represents devotion and the unlimited potential of human beings. Gandhi was a well-known devotee of Ram as well. He had tremendous powers over his own senses, and he had a very powerful influence on the history of India and its relationship with colonial powers.<\/p>\n

Dr. Pillai further explains Rama\u2019s birthday: \u201cRama Navami is the birthday of Rama. Navami means the 9th Moon. The 9th Moon is a very important Moon because Rama is born. The reason why we celebrate the birth of Avatars, Messiahs, is that they represent hope. They are also the time when we can awaken their energy. Rama is the one that fought for truth all his life. That is the energy that we recall on this day, also the power behind the sound Rama.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The Purpose of Rama\u2019s Birth<\/span><\/p>\n

Rama was born as the son of Dasharath, the king of Ayodhya. The purpose of his birth was to defeat another king, Ravana of Lanka. Ravana may have ruled a kingdom, but he was also ruled by his own senses and bodily instincts. The tyrant ruling over him is a universal route of evil everywhere. Rama, therefore, represents control over the senses, victory over evil and falsehood, and honoring your Divine Purpose (Dharma) with purity of action.<\/p>\n

Sita, Rama\u2019s Wife<\/span><\/p>\n

In South India, Rama Navami is also a celebration of the marriage of Rama and his wife, Sita. While Rama is an incarnation of Wealth Archetype Vishnu, Sita is an incarnation of Vishnu\u2019s wife, Lakshmi, the Wealth Goddess. Rama represents the perfection of virtue in men while Sita represents the perfection of feminine virtue and courage.<\/p>\n
