Shiva Lingam is a representation of Shiva. Nandi (Bull) is the Divine vehicle of Shiva. This Shiva Lingam and Nandi statue help dissolve bad karma, free you from karmic suffering, give you peace and harmony, and surround you with positive energy.
According to scriptures, feeding food or Annadhanam is believed to be the greatest donation. This act of generosity is a sacred practice that can earn the merits (Punya) of performing good deeds. The Puranas, Upanishads, and Manusmriti emphasize the importance of food feeding. Performing the sacred act of food feeding helps absolve all sins and negative karma, enables purification of consciousness, helps accumulation of positive karma, enhances spiritual awareness, helps form a deep connection with the Divine, gives merits (Punya) of good deeds or actions, and grants Divine grace and blessings.
Karthigai Deepam
The festival derives its name from the Krittika (Karthigai) star under which it occurs. “Deepam” means lamp or light. The event commemorates Shiva’s manifestation as an Infinite Pillar of Light at Arunachala (Tiruvannamalai) to establish his supremacy over Vishnu and Brahma
Karthigai Deepam symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and spiritual awakening. It is a time to invoke Shiva’s blessings for purification, transformation, and Divine wisdom
The primary deity worshipped is Lord Shiva in the form of Arunachaleshwar (Annamalaiyar) — the Agni Lingam, or Fire Element of the Panchabhoota Sthalams. Muruga (Kartikeya), associated with the Krittika star, is also honored for his valor, wisdom, and inner strength.
Lighting a lamp represents awakening the inner light of consciousness. The wick symbolizes ego, the oil represents innate tendencies, and the flame symbolizes spiritual knowledge that removes ego and darkness.
In Tamil Nadu, especially at Tiruvannamalai, the day is celebrated by lighting countless lamps in homes and temples. The highlight is the lighting of the Maha Deepam atop Arunachala Hill, symbolizing Shiva’s eternal flame.
On this sacred occasion, AstroVed will invoke 16 Grand Ceremonies, including Fire Labs, Special Poojas, and Sponsorships of Ghee and Food Feeding at the Holy Hill of Thiruvannamalai (Arunachala), to invoke the grace and blessings of Shiva as Arunachaleswara (Eternal Light of Wisdom), 12 Dwadasa Jyotirlingams(Radiant Pillars of Shiva’s Divine Protection), and Muruga (Celestial Warrior of Light & Victory).
The grand lighting of the Maha Deepam takes place at sunset, usually around 6:00 PM, when the Krittika (Karthigai) Nakshatra is in ascendance. This marks the climax of the festival, when a huge flame is lit atop the Arunachala Hill using pure cow ghee, signifying Shiva’s eternal light visible across miles.
According to legend, Brahma and Vishnu quarreled over supremacy. To end the dispute, Shiva manifested as a towering column of fire with no beginning or end. Brahma and Vishnu failed to find its limits, symbolizing Shiva’s infinite nature
The Krittika star (Pleiades) is associated with Muruga (Pleiadian Warrior of Light), who is said to have been nurtured by the six Krittika maidens. Lighting lamps under this star honors both Muruga’s fiery energy and Shiva’s infinite light. Muruga represents the flame of knowledge that destroys ignorance and grants courage.
