“Lakshmi of all the Goddesses…she represents wealth. Without wealth, everything falls apart. Wealth is very important in everybody’s life, not only on the earth plane but even in Heaven. If Lakshmi leaves that place, it will be devastated.”

– Dr. Pillai

Mahalakshmi Rising Day: Birth of Wealth Goddess

The day when Mahalakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth and Fortune, emerged in all her divine grace from Kshirasagara, the Ocean of Milk, is celebrated as Mahalakshmi Rising Day. It is the day when Goddess Maha Lakshmi, in all her resplendent glory, rose from the depths of the ocean clothed in shining yellow and her brilliance and divine beauty brightened all the worlds. She stepped forth with a golden pot overflowing with grains and gold in her hand. Every year, this day is celebrated on the 11th Waxing Moon in the Tamil month Karthigai (mid-Nov to mid-Dec). It is the greatest day of the year to receive her blessings to destroy poverty consciousness and give birth to new prosperity consciousness.

Pillai Center will be celebrating Mahalakshmi Rising Day, the birth of the Wealth Goddess Lakshmi, by performing a Grand Fire Lab with 6 priests chanting her special seed sounds, along with Poojas to her various powerful forms to invoke her abundant blessings for wealth, auspiciousness, wish-fulfillment, and financial stability in life.

The Legend of Mahalakshmi Rising: The Churning of the Cosmic Ocean of Milk

Lakshmi is the Goddess of wealth, fortune and beauty. The term Lakshmi is said to have originated from the Sanskrit word ‘Lakshya’ which means aim or goal. She remains as the very purpose of life, as she stands for all that is good, beneficial and auspicious, both on material and spiritual fronts. The extensive Bhagavata Purana describes the rising of Mahalakshmi from the depths of the vast ocean of milk, when it was churned by the mighty Devas (godly beings) and Asuras (demonic beings), having Mandara, the huge mountain as the center rod and Vasuki, the serpent king, as the churning rope. While this act was performed mainly for obtaining Amrit, the nectar of immortality, Goddess Lakshmi emerged as the third last of 14 treasures produced by the Cosmic Ocean of Milk.

The scripture further describes that her luster lit the four quarters of the sky, and Devas, Asuras, and Rishis were bewitched by her beauty, sublime grace, and magnificence. As she stepped out of the ocean,

  • Indra (The king of heaven) offered her the lotus throne
  • Gandharvas (celestial singers) sang mellifluously
  • Apsaras (celestial dancers) danced ecstatically to the divine music
  • Vishwakarma (celestial architect) gave her divine ornaments
  • Brahma (Creation Archetype) gave her a lotus, which was similar to the one in which he was born

After accepting the oblations, her eyes looked around, longing to see her consort, the supreme God Vishnu. As soon as her sight fell on him, she walked towards him, laid the garland named Vaijayanti around his neck that she was carrying, and joined him as his divine consort.

Mahalakshmi Rising Day Ceremonies Explained
