Mahalaya Paksha (Dark Fortnight in the Tamil month of Purattasi), also called Pitru Paksha, is regarded as the most sacred time of the year to invoke and appease your Pitrus (Ancestors) with Tarpanam—ancestral rituals performed with sacred offerings.
According to the Markandeya Purana, when your ancestors are satisfied with these offerings, they transform into your greatest benefactors—blessing you and your future generations with prosperity, fame, longevity, success, and ultimately, Swarga (Heaven).
To help you take advantage of this ancestral powertime, Pillai center will perform Special Ancestral Poojas and Fire Labs conducted by expert Priests, along with Food Feeding and Donations during the Critical Moon Phases and Star Days of Mahalaya to satisfy the souls of your ancestors, relieve their suffering, and invoke their abundant blessings.
According to Dharma Shastra, Tarpanam offerings appease the souls of the past 7 generations, help them attain peace, and move towards their final destination, ‘Brahma Loka’ (Higher World). It can dissolve two types of ancestral karma
As the midpoint of the 15 phases of Mahalaya, offerings made on this day benefit all departed souls— connected to you or not— and especially support those who led unrighteous lives or suffered from untimely/unnatural deaths. Performing ancestral rites on this day dissolves karmic blocks and awakens Gnana Prada (Knowledge & Wisdom) for success and right action.
Vyatipata is presided over by the Vishwa Devas (Universal Gods) who maintain the elements and respond to sincere invocations. As per scriptures, on this day, the Universal Gods descend to the earthplane when invoked in powerful ancestral rituals to witness the ceremony and take these offerings to your ancestors (Pitrus). During Mahalaya, invoking them in Tarpanam empowers offerings to reach your ancestors and Gurus, bestowing courage, influence, prosperity, fame, and financial stability for sustained growth.
This year, Magha—ruled by the Pitrus (Ancestors) and carrying Tyage Kshepani Shakti (Power of Renunciation)—coincides with the 13th Moon, amplifying its ability to cut binding attachments and elevate ancestral souls. Known as the Star of Power, it bestows wealth, social standing, and recognition aligned with past-life karma. The Matsya Purana states that performing Tarpanam on Magha brings peace to ancestors and channels their blessings, bringing success, growth, and abundance to present and future generations.
Mahalaya Amavasya (Sarva Pitru Amavasya) marks the culmination of the fortnight and is a universal day for all ancestors. If you have missed performing Tarpanam in the past, this day provides the opportunity to fulfill your sacred duty. Rituals can be performed for souls who died untimely, in accidents, or without progeny, and to grant relief to known and unknown ancestors.
Tarpanam on this day resolves Pitru Dosha (ancestral affliction) and shields from negative influences and misfortunes, nurtures harmony in relationships and strengthens family unity, and bestows health, prosperity, vitality, and protection.
Rig Veda emphasizes Dhaan (Donation) to the needy as a great virtue that can bestow good merits and Divine favor for happiness and contentment
