Goddess Gayatri is depicted as sitting on a red lotus, which symbolizes the awakening of the heart. She is portrayed with five faces (Panchamukhi; pancha= five, mukhi=face). Her five faces stand for the external five senses and the internal five life forces (pranas). She purifies each of them. She has ten eyes that gaze in ten directions. Her divine vehicle is a white swan. She is symbolized as holding the book of Vedas, which signifies the source of all intellect and wisdom.
