Who is Lord Shani

One amongst the nine heavenly bodies christened as Navagraha in Hindu astrology, Lord Shani or Sanaischara, refers to planet Saturn. Hindus worship Shani as the god of Karma, justice, and retribution.

Shani was born to Lord Surya Dev and Chhaya Devi. He is a devotee of Lord Shiva and got several boons after performing severe penance towards him. Lord Shani has two wives, namely Neela and Manda.

Lord Shani features a black complexion and has four hands, carrying a sword, rod, and Bow and Arrow. He is found seated on a crow. His apparels and ornaments are also black.

Astrological Characteristics of Lord Shani

According to Vedic Astrology, Saturn is the ruling planet of two Zodiac Signs, Capricorn and Aquarius. It represents the servants and Air element of the Pancha Bhootas (5 elements). Among the three Gunas, he represents the Tamasic Guna.

Lord Shani is the deity of planet Saturn and Saturday. His celestial movements are very slow, taking 2 ½ years to move from one sign to another. Hence, Astrologically, his position in an individual’s birth chart is very vital and important.

All individuals go through a phase of Shani Sade Sati once in their lifetime, and it is believed that it is when they experience the most complex struggles of their life. But, if the deeds of an individual are good, then Lord Shani will bestow his blessings during this period will reduce one’s misfortune and hardships.

Thus, Hindus usually worship and offer prayers to Lord Shani to please him and alleviate its malefic effects.
