What is Brahma Muhurta?

Brahma Muhurta is a Sanskrit terminology meaning the time of Brahman (the Hindu God for Creation). It is the one hour and 36 minutes time period before Sunrise and ends 48 minutes before it. The time of Sunrise determines the Brahma Muhurtham. For example, if Sunrise is at 5 AM, the Brahma muhurta begins at 3:24 AM. If Sunrise is at 6 AM, Brahma muhurta begins at 4:24 AM.

Further, the Ancient Indians classified the time as follows

15 Nimesha = one Kashta

15 Kashta = one Laghu

15 Laghu = one Ghatika

2 Ghatika (30 Laghu) = One muhurta

30 Muhurta = One day (of 24 hours)

One Muhurtha equals 48 minutes approximately.

Brahma muhurta is the second-last muhurta before Sunrise. While some believe it starts at 3:30 AM and ends at 5:30 AM, it is not true. Brahma muhurta begins 1 hour 36 minutes before the Sunrise and ends 48 minutes before Sunrise, lasting for 48 minutes. The time of Sunrise will not be the same each day, and it varies every day based on the time of the year and geographical location. As a result, the exact time of Brahma muhurta also will differ.
