The literal meaning of these couplets—Arut Perum Jyoti / Arut Perum Jyoti / Thani Perum Karunai / Arut Perum Jyoti—is:
Arul is an effulgent light, the most powerful light.
What is Arul? Omniscience, omnipotence, and omnipresence.
The most desirable, unlimited quality of light, is a matter of an effulgent light.
How are you going to get it? Thani Perum Karunai / Arut Perum Jyoti. You are going to get it through the mercy of the God of Light.
Omniscience, omnipotence, and omnipresence is an effulgent light—and you will get it through the mercy of the Divine, or of the God of Light.
That is the literal meaning of these words used in this chant.
The words are extremely powerful. The meaning for these words is only an approximation. The word Arul is prior to meaning. It gives you a transformation that is needed. That’s how the mantra works.
A mantra is not tied to the meaning, although there is a meaning component to it.
Arul is prior to meaning, and to say Arul is to live omniscience, omnipotence, and omnipresence. It is a light of immense proportion.
When you say Arul, you should always feel that you have already touched omniscience, omnipotence, and omnipresence; you have become God. That’s why it’s called the Maha Mantra.
