  5. The Meaning of Pancha...

If you attend Dr. Pillai’s birthday trip to India this year, in-person or virtually, one of the items you will receive is a Pancha Bhoot mala.

A mala is a string of prayer beads. Like a Catholic rosary, it’s often used for keeping track of repetitions of a prayer or mantra.

Pancha Bhoota means the five great elements: Earth, air, fire, water, and ether/space/spirit.

Every material and bead in the Pancha Bhoot mala has a special significance and vibration. It combines the auspicious energies of sandalwood (red chandan), lotus seed (thamarai mani), rudraksha, quartz crystal (sphatik), and tulsi beads.

Significance & Meaning of the Mala Beads

Red sandalwood: The beads give vibrant energy, strength, divine protection, courage, and willpower. The beads have a beautiful natural aroma.

Sphatik quartz: It amplifies thoughts and prayers, increases healing and intuition, and calms the mind.

Lotus seeds: These are often used for repeating mantras for Wealth Goddess Mantra Lakshmi. The lotus flower symbolizes spiritual growth, fertility, beauty, and prosperity. Rain does not disturb a lotus flower because the drops do not stick to it, and this is one of its qualities that symbolize imperturbable peace of mind.

Five mukhi rudraksha: It symbolizes the 5 forms of Shiva, the Supreme Archetype of Karma Removal. The vibration carries frequencies for good health, prosperity, intelligence, self-awareness, and insight. Students, sages, and those with intellectual occupations have worn these beads since ancient times.

Tulsi wood: Tulsi, also known as Holy Basil, is a medicinal and ceremonial plant. Offerings are given, during ceremonies, to Ram, Vishnu, and Krishna, two of whom are Avatars (Divine Incarnations) of Vishnu, Archetype of Wealth and husband of Lakshmi. The beads made from the wood of the plant emit healing vibrations.

When used as medicine, tulsi lowers stress and the stress hormone, cortisol. It also opens and heals the heart chakra and provides oxygen to the brain and the other organs of the body.
