Maha Shivaratri, The Great Night of Shiva
Dr. Pillai: This is a very important day, particularly the night of Maha Shivaratri is very important, because it is the day that can give you the highest wisdom that is possible beyond the mind, and that is what is needed. Because the mind’s intelligence can give you only limited success, because the mind itself is ignorant, we have to go beyond the mind.
Significance of Maha Shivaratri
What is going to happen on this night? And why is this night so significant? Because it is the night when there is a special blessing from Lord Shiva. He picked this particular night to help not only the human beings here on this Earth plane, but also the entire Universe.

The Maha Mantra
The sounds ‘NaMaShiVaya’ have been called the Maha Mantra, the greatest mantra. Why? Because they describe the sum total of principles that create the Universe and can give to you the power of all the five elements. The Universe is created with the sound ‘NaMaShiVaYa.’
The Universe is nothing but a combination of the elements Na – Ma – Shi – Va – Ya. The five elements are represented by the sounds ‘Na – Ma – Shi – Va – Ya.’ ‘Na’ represents the Earth element, ‘Ma’, the Water element, ‘Shi’, the Fire element, ‘Va’, the element of Air, and ‘Ya’, the element of Akash, Ether, or space.
Whenever you say the sounds ‘NaMaShiVaYa,’ what is happening is, you are getting in touch with the five elements. Why do you have to get in touch with the five elements? The five elements created the world, the Universe, you and me – the body, the mind, and our existence. The five elements are extremely powerful. They are within you and without you. That connection will be established through the practice of this mantra.
