  5. Powerful time of the...

This week, especially September 19th is the most powerful time of the year to bring transformation in one’s lives.

One such happening is Mahalaya Amavasya that comes on Sept 19th which is New Moon, a day of the darkest fortnight. This New Moon commemorates the end of offerings that has been happening for 14 days. This particular New Moon has a special significance as it is a day to propitiate your ancestors and offer Tarpanam as many times as you can.

It is said, that our ancestors come and visit us on this day and hang around us.

Offering of food such as Tarpanam that consists of Rice, Black Sesame Seeds, Nickel and Water, pleases them and reaches them immediately, and directly, according to Lord Yama, the Lord of Death.

According to the Hindu epic Mahabharata, Karna, one of the greatest warriors was known for his sacrifice, courage, selflessness and a very generous man. After his death the great charity he had done on earth was returned to him hundred fold in heaven.  However all he got was gold and silver. There was no food as he been very generous only with gold and silver during his life. He prayed to God of Death and was sent back to earth for fourteen days to make up for this.

During the fourteen days he fed the poor and offered Anna- Dhana or offering of Rice.  After his return to the heaven he was offered food in plenty. The fourteen days commemorates  in the Mahalaya Amavasaya which is our last day of offerings dedicated to honor all our deceased ancestors and thank them for everything they have given to us.  It is believed that due to the grace of Lord Yama, rituals done at this particular period brings  unique merits.

All those who had failed to do deeds of charity and Anna-Dana (gift of food) and  who were denied comforts in the heaven were helped by these ceremonies.

Tarpanam, is an offering of Rice, Sesame Seeds and a Coin such as a Nickel  along with water to all our deceased ancestors is as an expression of our gratitude who lived before us. We would not have anything without their contribution.

Honoring our deceased ancestors on Mahalaya Amavasya shows our respect and remembering them on this particular day with offerings of Tarpanam will bring miracles into our lives. Offer as many times as you want between Sunrise and Sunset.

People in India observe the Mahalaya Amavasya with great faith. They worship and offer food which is considered very important during this period.

Donating food and clothing to the poor is a great way to honor our ancestors on this particular day.

And, if you’re looking to honor your ancestors on this particular New Moon on September 19th by feeding the poor, Tripura Foundation needs all the support  and help from people who can make their contribution to,
