Guru Purnima is a special night where the energy of the Guru is available in a very big way. It comes as the Full Moon when all the Siddhas, Masters, and Enlightened beings are most available to us.

The Guru is more than a teacher or expert, the Guru is the cosmic principle responsible for initiating and guiding your spiritual awakening.

“The Guru is often attributed to have the ability to change the karma of people and they have taken upon themselves this mission of making life easier for people. So that is their obligation.” – Dr. Pillai

The Guru belongs to all spiritual traditions. Whatever religious beliefs you may hold, this is the night to offer gratitude to your spiritual mentors, both those you’ve met in this life and those who may be guiding you from beyond.

For anyone seeking enlightenment, a connection with an authentic enlightened Guru is the best thing that can happen.

He or she does more than teach concepts and techniques. The Guru’s blessing makes all teachings come alive, burning karma and accelerating your growth leaps and bounds beyond what can be done on your own.

Here are 7 facts about Guru Purnima you may not know.

  • In Sanskrit, the syllable Gu means darkness or ignorance. Ru means to remove or dispel, so the term Guru means “remover of darkness.”
  • In the Vedic tradition, the Guru is comparable to your own Mother, who takes care of your physical and emotional needs, and your Father, who watches after your material well-being. It’s their job to ensure you are introduced to the Guru who can take you all the way to God.
  • As the remover of darkness, the Guru is last bridge between the seeker and the Almighty God.
  • Like the Full Moon absorbs the Sun’s rays and reflects them on Earth, the Guru absorbs the Light of the Divine, redirecting and showering Grace on students and devotees.
  • This year, Guru Purnima falls in the Vedic Month of Ashada, ruled by the Sun.
  • Without the Guru’s blessing, spiritual practices can have little to no effect, and sacred mantras are considered locked. Guru’s Grace is the key.
  • Guru Purnima is like a Spiritual New Year, the best time to initiate new practices, begin a mantra, or recommit to the path you’re on. This is the best time to take action!
